Hi folks.

I bought a 240mm Gengetsu Gyoto from Jon at JKI back in 2017.

My father has fallen in love with the knife. My stepmother would like to order him a comparable one for Christmas.

Since 2017 I have fallen well out of the rabbit hole of brands, metallurgy, cost/value, etc when it comes to Japanese knifes.

I was wondering if you guys could bring me up to speed or offer advice in a current offering that compares well with my Gengetsu?

For those that aren't aware:
240mm Gyuto
Double Bevel
Stainless over white steel carbon
Round-hex handled
~$300-$400 USD shipped to Canada

Any advice or help in directing me towards similar current knives with a strong cost/quality ratio would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for any help.

Kevin.

Gengetsu specific carbon is white steel.

Most similar off the shelf knife I've found is Yoshikane. Though I may have a Gengetsu laying about.

350mm? Typo for 240?.

Yes, thank you. I missed that. Should read 240mm

Yoshikane is a comparable option.

Nihei is pretty similar.

Masashi makes basically tall versions of Yoshikane.

Wakui is really similar, just without the dead flat cutting edge like Yoshikane.

Thanks a lot, this is very helpful.

Haha. I got fickle and ordered Dad that Nihei from Carbon. It's just too pretty of a knife to pass.

Hoping I didn't just reignite my own expensive passion ...
