Hamelin's cadenza in Hungarian Rhapsody is bonkers. I asked him about it once, and he said it was inspired by Bugs Bunny. I totally get Loony Tunes vibes off it, which makes me happy since that's where I first got exposed to Liszt as a child. My favorite recording of all time (maybe) is Hamelin's recording of Alkan's Concerto for Solo Piano -- an epic 50-minute pianistic thrillride that requires the performer to play the solo and "orchestral" parts at the same time on a single instrument. The breakdown and buildup at 15:45-18:00 are incomprehensibly awesome. One of the most difficult pieces ever conceived; few can can play it and fewer have tried to record it -- and Hamelin's versions are the best. Alkan also wrote a symphony for solo piano. Insane. But back to Shigefusa...
