I found this little guy, a bit worse for wear with some of my grandfather's old stuff. I'd appreciate a bit of help identifying it if any of you have some more info.
Guess no one can help. Would have thought someone here would know

Took my new (and first!) kiridashi for a spin today, courtesy of @Illyria

I’m a lefty, but actually it’s not the worst thing in the world to get some practice in for my off hand sharpening.

Well that is very nice indeed isn’t it! I was very tempted to pick up one of those two on BST, but I got one from Ed’s initial drop and thought it’d be greedy to deny others. Glad it’s gone to a good home :).

Also reminded me to go sort out one of my own…

I initially bought two of these, and sold one. But the geometry of the one I kept was more problematic than I’d anticipated, took a fair bit of effort to get this into working order.

Final stone was a Tajima (again from @ethompson, natch). I’ve not bothered removing all of the previous coarse scratch pattern from the work I had to do, but just look at how it picks the detail out nevertheless. Very good and interesting mid-grit polishing stone…

Thanks mate! Can't believe it's taken me this long to pick one up - the concept of being able to test progressions/new stones etc in a short space of time is blowing my mind a bit. 😂

What tends to go wrong on Kiridashi? I naively assumed it was fairly straightforward geometry, but of course that's never the case with this hobby...

The geometry is fairly straightforward, yep. Though as with yanagi and deba &c. - if it's a bit out initially then it can sometimes take a surprising amount of time and nuance to fix.

The thing here was not just that the bevel needed flattening properly (which is the case more often than not), but also that the edge profile wasn't straight, it had a 'recurve' / 'frown'. And the combination of those two things meant it took a little longer than usual.

Thank you very much!

Even though the kanji are a little different, I almost said it looked very similar to my one a couple of posts above. Which is a relatively fancy kamaji / wrought clad Ikeuchi.

And thinking about it now... I actually found an American website that was selling some kamaji clad Ikeuchi kiris with the same gold in the kanji that yours has (mine doesn't). The only other difference I could see was that the ones they were selling were apparently Shirogami core, whereas mine is Aogami.

Unfortunately they don't have any left any more, but I think this is probably where your grandad's one came from, it was about $160 from memory.

Thank you for the additional info! It's a lovely little blade I look forward to polishing it more.

I should've mentioned it sooner, apologies. Just cos I can't read kanji, though after they were translated above - I'd be reasonably sure that's what it is anyway.

Ikeuchi do make some inexpensive kiris ground straight out of pre-lam, but yours has clearly been forged. And even in the unpolished pics above I think I can see some of the kamaji character in the cladding. All of which would tie in with the gold lettering of the one I saw on that US site.

Some more info below from the site I bought mine off. As I say - the only difference I could discern apart from the gold, is that the ones in the US were apparently Shirogami.

It should polish up an absolute treat, and what a lovely thing to have inherited from your grandfather! :)

Yeah, it's forged wrought iron clad. Looks really nice, I'll post some pictures when I have a polish I'm happy with!

Look forward to seeing it!

Even using a mid grit, and with no fancy progression they look pretty nice (imo). This is just from when I sharpened mine the other day on a Tajima, still has a handful of slightly deeper scratch marks from when I flattened it, but quite pretty nonetheless. And there's a good amount of figure and interest in the wrought.
