intelligence ought to be a surviving trait, makes me wonder what the natural spread actually is...

I'm always a bit wary about cutting stuff when my brain isn't working 100%. I'm worried that in a lapse of cerebral flatulence I'll forget that I'm holding a knife while scratching my nose or something and stabbing myself in the eye...

Looks like a hornets nest in a mailbox.
Oh dear. Yes. I once found a Southwestern Paper Wasp nest with my hand.

Fortunately their sting barely rates a 1 (out of 4 possible) on the Schmidt Pain Index.
I felt a sharp little kiss followed by five minutes of an … effervescent sensation.

Not like yellowjackets, those miserable accursed vermin. Those uckers hurt.

At what am I looking?
Well I was told there were "some wasps by the mailbox", so I walked down the driveway to take a look (in shorts and a t-shirt) and was ready to knock down a little nest with maybe 3-4 wasps on it. I peered in the newspaper box to see that angry brood of yellowjackets guarding their nest, as far in the back as possible. Needless to say, I went inside to gear up before returning to remove it, because our mail carrier wasn't willing to deliver with it in that location (understandably so).
