Hi all. Just curious; I use a knife magnet on my wall to hold my knives. Is that bad? If not, then why buy a saya (yes, they are pretty) for your knife if you are not traveling with them? I do understand that if you keep them in a drawer you will need them.
Am I missing something?

This is the key point. Many of us DO travel with our knives. If not... no saya needed. Hell TBH carbon knives in sayas when you live in a humid region can be pretty problematic.

Only if you buy too many knives & rotate if carbon mineral oil to store ok in a saya.

I mix drugstore mineral oil with drops of clove oil in it. Just a little makes it smell like
cloves. Clove oil kept carbon katana blades
in wooden saya scabbards. It is anti bacterial. Put oil inside of saya turn it on end to remove excess that didn't soak in. Have kept carbon blades like Yanagiba in saya only using few times a year. No rust problem at all over 10 years. Also have couple Japanese carbon swords in wooden saya. I take them out every 4 months to inspect & oil them. They are covered in sword wrap cloth on sword rack.
