Hi everyone,

I'm on a quest to find large whetstones. So far the largest have been able to find:

Gesshin 400 XL version : 10in x 4in (240mm x 100mm)

BBW: 12in x 4in (300mm X 100mm)

Suehiro Debado (200,1000,4000): 8.9in X 3.5in (225mm X 90mm)

Dans Arkansas stones: 12in X 3in (300mm x 75mm}

Norton IC11: 11.5in x 2.5in ( 290mm X 64mm)

Can anyone suggest other wide and long stones? I no longer enjoy sharpening large knives and cleavers on small stones and I'm looking to find larger options.

Thank you for your time

Ah yes forgot to add that I did try the round chosera stones. Unfortunately they broke in transit and I can't find anymore as I believe they were discontinued. The were also a lot smaller than I thought.

I bought a 20cm x 100cm belgian blue ;-)
Ah a perfect size! How do I get one? :D

I assume that's a shelf or something, does it have abrasive qualities?

Do you recommend the BBW, and is it possible to get a BBW sharpening stone made to custom size?

Are custom sizes possible in other stones such as Arkansas?

I never tried sharpening on this one as I doubt it has consistent enough sharpening qualities, it's pretty much eye candy only and indeed serves as a shelf.

Damn that is quite something! I was super exited clicking on that link but the price 😥

Looks absolutely amazing though! If I had 4k in my budget I'd def get it
Yeah… a real oddity truthfully. Doubt it’ll ever sell and that’s fine. Very cool stone and biggest suita I’ve ever seen

Can I ask how you got one in that size? Was it a custom order?

Is there a place you recommend where I can see other larger natural stones?

Wondering why you're insisting on large sizes. I admit I find large stones comfortable, but have learned a lot handling small ones.

around here Belgian Blue hardstone is used for kitchen worktops etc, not especially knfe sharpening grade material bu it carries the same name ;-)

My kitchen worktop is made out of synthetic Belgian Blue, I would not risk taking a knife to it

I'll be honest I just find larger stones more enjoyable to use for sharpening large knives and cleavers.

I feel it helps increase my stability and ability to maintain consistency when setting an edge across the length of the blade.

For smaller blades like pocketknives I do not mind and often prefer a narrower stone. But for larger blades I cannot see any disadvantage to a wider stone. I guess it takes longer to flatten but I'm alright with that.

Dan's sells what they call primitive cuts as well. Only finished on one side but at a discount.

Over here there are lots of old large manual grinding wheels like the one pictures below with diameter from about 30cm up to 60 or 80cm, and width in the range of about 7 to 9 cm

I was wondering if it was possible to cut one of these in "slabs" (possibly really very long) using an angle grinder with a diamond cutting disc for stones

Anybody has any experience with that?

That's a pretty good idea! I'll have a look into it. I'm sure with a big enough diamater wheel you could make a massive rectangular stone
