Hello

Sharpening my singelbevel knife following japaneseknifeimport video. At stage 2 of the sharpening he sharpens and talk about developing a burr. I cant really feel any burr, so either im untrained in feeling for the subtle burr, or the burr needs to be bigger. Should i grind until i have i have a big burr i can feel easy?

Which knife and which stone are you using?

A fine stone's burr can be difficult for a beginner to feel.

if you're not sure, keep going until you are

But also, check where you're hitting by using sharpie and look closely at the edge. Lastly, use your index and middle fingers to feel, not your thumb.
Jon, thanks very much! Your videos has helped me so much, and given me so much joy and passion in knife sharpening!

I will follow your guys advice, and use sharpie. Does it have to be sharpie marker in specific, or will any black marker do?

Any black marker that doesn't wash off.

Doesn't matter which color or brand. You just need to be able to see it and not have water wash it off.

I use a loupe with the sharpie. Makes quite a difference. It shows a burr may occur before the very edge has been reached.
