Honyaki gyuto in TWR from Samir Yousri. Asking Euro 750.

This is a very rare knife. The steel, TWR, is perhaps the first super steel, and with only a limited amount left it will only get harder to get a hold of knives with this steel. Yousri spoke with the maker of the steel, and they think that this is one of only a few TWR honyaki available. The hamon is rather weak, which is probably related to the make up of the steel.

It is difficult to accurately capture the finish of the knife. It has a mirror polish, with a subtle ”foggy” hamon. With some polish the finish can become even cleaner, but I was a bit careful to keep the hamon. The polish is a good base, should one want to try and bring out even more details from the steel.

Knife is a nimble gyuto, with a thin-mid grind. Grind is fully convex, with a right-hand bias. This is one of those knives that are just comfortable to use, and due to balance and size it seems to not cause any significant fatigue.

If you’ve not heard the maker’s name, Yousri is a well-respected member of the Swedish knife community. He has worked with lots of makers, most of the TWR from Sweden has been sold by Yousri, and he has an amazing collection of handle wood. He doesn’t produce that many knives, but those he produce are stunning (search for his IG).

207 x 48, 192 g. TWR, 66 HRC. Wa, ebony/silver/ebony/custom pin. Bought Dec -21.

Really cool. Do you happen to know the composition of TWR or if it's similar to something else that's more common? A google search brings up nothing

Sweet, thanks
Check 135WCrV4 in the knife steel data base if you wanna see more. Standard is 1.2513.

Partly it’s probably hype from the lore of the steel. Yousri likes it above anything else, but it might be a case of different strokes for different folks. Can add that just the steel option was a USD100 extra in San mai from one maker.

It's killing me that the specs on this are outside my preference, cause I remember drooling over it when you initially picked it up. I hope someone gives it a loving home
Had the knife been a bit bigger, I think it would’ve sold really quick. Also difficult with a maker that is not as widely recognized.

It’s also not that easy to bring out the hamon. But it can be done. This is a sibling knife.

Besides the obvious like kato, shig, Toyama, and Watanabe, what other smiths produce some really good heavyweight workhorse gyutos made of blue #2?

For me that size is actually quite tempting. I also like 240 but bigger is not always better :)

When are you gonna slide into my DMs? Danes always get special price… but you have to promise to take back Skåne!

Added a movie to the album. Forgot it. It shows the polish/hamon better. Should note that I did a rather quick polish with autosol, followed by vinegar etch and polish with Autosol again. I think it can be much improved, should one want to.

I've not been bumping this. But this is a bump. In my last bump I lowered price to Euro 650. I still think this is a fair price for a honyaki in TWR. You'll be hard pressed to find such a nice honyaki in this price range, and one in TWR is probably impossible.

I’ve updated the Imgur with the best movie I could make of the finish. It’s really nice as is. But if someone wants I think it’s possible to make it even better by only polishing with compounds.
