A classmate asked for some advice on buying a new gyuto, but the catch is he wants to use a $400 Amazon gift card. Are there high end Japanese knives worth buying on Amazon, or do you think he should try exchanging the gift card for cash on Reddit?

The Suisin Inox Western are solid intro knives and it looks like a 210 gyuto and a petty combo and a suji can be had for about $250. Couple of Shapton stones, SG500, SP1000, SP2000, would have him set up to sharpen and keep the total about $400.

There are no "high end" knives available on there that I saw while speed reading. Might get lucky with a Yoshihiro. THe Shapton lineup of stones is available there at pretty good prices.

Avoid the Shun, Dalstrong, and myriad others available.
