I know it's some kind of small chisel and some kind of small hammer, but what are they called, exactly?

I'd like to buy a set and do some engraving on a few of my cheap knives, just to screw around. Maybe I'll even start on some steel blanks or something.

Tagane 鏨 for chōkin 彫金. Not much available really and some are too soft.
There are different kinds of engraving in Japan with different tools. The knife meikiri stuff is the most basic of all and uses shorter, thicker chisels ground to wide angles of more than 90 degrees. As I recall it’s called keribori, last item on the list linked.

I'd recommend to get a tagane in general, carbide chisel, though a cold chisel would work fine too, all hardened steels are harder than iron and can cut them. A little longer and heavier than comfortable though
