Well, it's that time again. The time to make resolutions, predictions, hopes and wishes about what your next knife year might look like.

This year I was pretty heavily focused on rectangles and I'm sure there will be more dabbling in 2024. But, I think I'll need to scratch the santoku itch that has been just under the surface for a bit. I can see me testing out some different makes and sizes of santoku. Maybe a custom nakiri... I do think another sujihiki and honesuki need to be explored.

Other than that, I'm not sure the waters will be that turbulent. I'm honestly so pleased with the performance of the knives I have now that it gets harder and harder to commit to new ones. A good problem to have for sure!

So what about you folks?

And stones and such count too.

Most of my knives right now are laser to middleweight and I’m hoping to try out a workhorse at some point. I’m still chasing a few unicorns (I find Wakui’s damascus to be stunning) but also paradoxically trying to simplify the collection. 2024 will really be an ongoing battle between my ape hindbrain that looks at something shiny with a pleasing geometry and my prefrontal cortex that knows I more than enough knives to ever use in my entire life. That being said the fact that I’m able to entertain and enjoy this hobby reminds me that I’m incredibly far from the base of Maslow’s hierarchy - meaning I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.

I've got a custom order in with Takada for an extra tall 150mm ginsan petty, which will be ready in about 8 months. Very excited for that! Also on Dom's custom list, so looking forward to working with him to get something made as well. Overall, I still have yet to find a blade that can outcut my TxK Migaki or my Kipp laser, so maybe that will come along in 2024 as well!

My initial plan is pretty short and easy but we will see
Cleaver from Hampus is currently being worked on, actually really cool to watch he is sending me videos of the process via instagram. 52100 Warikomi
Just got the call on a custom spot from Bidinger, he cut the knife out of A2 today and shared the profile, this should be done in January.
I have my stuff picked out with Mr. Kamon for some point hopefully by the end of the year.
Thats it for now....... Maybe my first natural stone?

I could just carry on with what I have as I'm in a pretty good place.

That said, I'm on the books for a nakiri, hopefully before ARM and on the books for a gyuto hopefully by the end of 2024.

Other than that, I keep thinking of switching over to more diamond sharpening stones. That said I really can't justify it with the amount I sharpen and that I've got a pretty decent set of Shaptons.

On Kippingtons books for his next small batch. My number one for '24 is to get on @Skye Eilers Knives books I cant get enough of his work, and hoping to pick up a Yanick and Raquin. Well see how that plays out tho.
How does one get that golden ticket to Kipp's books? I've asked him before, but he's always told me he doesn't take any custom orders

I am not on his books for a custom, he also told me he's not really into customs anymore and likes to stick with his proven designs these days. I am just on his list to claim one of his next small batch of 52100 gyutos.

Got some grails arriving in the first few months of ‘24. Hoping to add one suji and one nakiri to the mix later in the year.

Most importantly, hoping to wrap up the three major projects I have on hand without acquiring any new ones (@refcast stop sending me links to cool stuff).

Oh yeah, I do razors now so I’ll probably pick up one of those too.

Hmmm well I want a 220ish gyuto in wootz but have not found the right piece yet.
I will also be on the hunt for a few more jnats.

My other goals might be slightly different than everyone elses as a maker I want to surpass 2023. Of which I made 106 knives.
My Goal for 2024 in to make 200 and of that 200 half being kitchen knives.

I’m thinking maybe a nicer version of a 1102 or similar would be good to have. And maybe a Toyama 270. What would be really nice is a thicker Y Tanaka wrought-clad gyuto….

I have no plans to acquire any new knives, grateful for what I have which still provides an interesting variety and rotation. We'll see how long that lasts.

Maybe I should have a resolution to prepare and eat more sushi and sashimi, then I'd have a need for a single bevel yanagiba 😈

@refcast, @chefwp would like to speak with you.
