I must have violated a rule, but I cannot find the specific rule. I posted the name of the vendor where I bought my new knife, and it was hashed out when it actually posted. So, I concluded that it must be against one of the rules to do that. Can someone let me know what the actual rule is so I don’t make the same mistake again?

Thanks.

Dan

guessing it was cktg

the actual rule is be sure to play with the stupid filter (that is likely appreciated by no one) and find out how to circumvent it

e.g.
https://www.chefknivestogo.com/tojirogai3.html->
c hefknivestogo.com/tojirogai3.html

that way people can follow your links with minimal effort

It's not really a rule. You can mention whomever you like. But if you spell out c k t g it will be censored by the forum software due to old bad blood.

Ok, so, I want to make sure I understand. CKTG is filtered out, but not because of any current prohibition? So mentioning CKTG is ok?

i don't know. but in practice, everyone talks about cktg because it's a major retailer. with a bit of (unnecessary) trouble, everyone shares links to it as they like.

bad blood or not, it's clearly something that's in the past, and many users don't even understand the beef.

Mentioning CKTG is ok. Posting a link to their website gets filtered.

There are others that predate CKTG as well.

The industry really isn't that big but, new people come along and don't get the history ....

From the other blade forum:
Mike Turber and World of Weapons! Spark! Mad Dog Knives and Earl Stewart!

I forget the other retailor that was banned from this site ...

Mad Dog Knives...thats a name I have not heard in a long time. Kevin McClung has managed to piss off a lot of folks over the years. He and the Strider knives fans went at it for a long time.

I got a DSU2 and was underwhelmed. Strider wasn't really my thing but, I certainly understood why they did things the way they did.

I don't know what Kevin is doing these days but, I haven't seen his knives or his name anywhere in many years. Unlike Newt Livesay and Wicked Knives, I haven't missed him! Those 1095 knives of his has some heat treat wizardry I haven't seen since! I guess moving on to the "super steels" in the mass market created the lost art of his 1095 heat treat.

Mark was a businessman when others selling knives were essentially hobbyists. Unfortunately when a Japanese maker started to get popular he would try to source knives from them and the person who helped make them popular would lose their ability to sell because they would get undercut on pricing. It was a bit like Walmart steamrolling local mom-and-pop shops.

HIs store helped many gain entry into the knife and sharpening world at reasonable prices, but as he started building up more by squashing others some people stopped doing business with him. The Richmond knives were almost a snub to his customer base, as they were pretty crappy knives but got the full marketing department hype. There was also a big blow-up after that related to Dave Martell, but I think many people either had already stopped being customers by that time, or decided they were fine continuing to deal with him in order to get the best pricing and selection.

That Richmond was the worst knife I ever bought. I literally had $5 Chinese grocery store knives that held a better edge. Mine was so soft, I think it would dull on a single pound of tomatoes for salads or a stew, was totally worthless on potatoes becoming butterknife dull very quickly.
