Makes you realize how hard to control racecars were raced at high altitudes in South America winding switchbacks. Death common place. Lack of communication out in the wilderness. High adventure 1,000 mile races. Cans of gasoline strapped to the cars.

Fangio was one of greatest racers of all time. Raced in South America in his youth.

Came to Europe late 30's Won 5 world championships all in his 40's. In 4 different cars. Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Mercedes, Ferrari. Couldn't put it down who needs fiction. 😁

Just finished The Devil’s Chessboard by David Talbot. I had a vague idea of what the post war/cold war power structure was like, and I’ve had an interest in the coup d’état since David Lifton’s book came out in the early 80s. But I did not know the personalities, how it was organized, or how decisions were made and executed. This book paints a vivid picture of that era and how the strings were pulled behind the scenes. Well researched and written.

You might like Ghost Wars and the follow-up book, Directorate S, by Steve Coll. Very well-researched and a Pulitzer winner.

Who would have thought that the Americans
would supply Afghanistan with weapons that would shoot down the Russian helicopter gunships. Russians lost so many soldiers & equipment that they pulled out. Then the USA made the same mistake in the longest war in their history.

Irresistible Revolution, Matthew Lohmeier

Irresistible Revolution is a timely and bold contribution from an active-duty Space Force lieutenant colonel who sees the impact of a neo-Marxist agenda at the ground level within our armed forces.

Finished up several books recently while on vacation:
  • A History of St Lucia, Jolien Harmsen
  • The Wretched of the Earth, Franz Fanon
  • The Seed Underground, Janisse Ray
And made it about halfway through and need to finish here soon:
  • Philosophy of Praxis: Western Marxism and Socialist Humanism, Leo Kofler (trans. Jünke)
  • Burn the Place, Iliana Regan
Next will be Nose Dive by Harold McGee.

RIP Milan Kundera, he was a unique voice in the literary wilderness, I haven't read him in 20 years, but I loved his books, although contrary to popular opinion, "Unbearable Llightness.." was not my favorite, although it was quite good.

From NPR:
He was always interested in humor, especially in the face of something deathly serious. In a rare 1983 interview with the Paris Review, he said: "My lifetime ambition has been to unite the utmost seriousness of question with the utmost lightness of form."
Mixing the two together, Milan Kundera believed, reveals something honest about our lives.

As you know I like non fiction. Current events we live in a interesting time. I watched some of Peter Zeihan
on utube. From what I know from reading some things he said seemed to ring true. Like how many parts of the planet wind & or Solar panels have very low production. Hawaii is different we have wind & solar. We put solar panels on our garage roof Sunpower top of the line. Our Tesla battery is fully charged well before noon. That's with the grid Taking power from us during peak power usage. We could easy live off grid & have more than enough power.

Zeihan is a geopolitical strategist. It maybe impossible to totally predict what will happen in the 21st century.
Some things he said in this book aren't happening yet, while others are happening already like Iran taking over ships. He tells why Venezuela is a failing country. Biden just gave 400,000 Venezuelans in the US work visas to allow them to stay in the country. One thing I do believe there will be more refugees we see the beginning Syria, Ukraine, It will affect Europe, the America's, were ever it is impossible living conditions they will flee.

I've seen a few of his talks. Interesting stuff, even if a lot is long term speculation.

Yes a lot of his theory is aging populations in many countries far more seniors than young persons.

Vegas can't even get sport betting right predicting future has long odds.

He says that the USA will pull back from being global police. Take on more of own industry. His knowledge of raw materials worldwide & who makes what is extensive.

Blokley turned me on to this. After reading multiple threads here & watching utube by folder & outdoor knives I finally bought a Magnacut knife after reading how Larrin worked it out in his mind & convinced Crucible to make it. Having trouble sleeping at night till it came out. Finding that it was more stainless than expected. Also edge retention. After using it 2 months still slicing tomatoes I wanted to thin it some & sharpen it. Got it very sharp. It's a keeper so knocked off plastic handle rehandled it.

I'm more of non fiction reader. Always interested in natural World of which we are a part.

Had a girlfriend years ago she was smarter than me valedictorian of her high school. Always had her nose in books often science fiction. Phillip Dick & others in late 1970's. One of his books inspired the Movie Bladerunner one of best science fiction movies ever made.

I check local library on line went & picked up first book in this series. Man it's thick over 1000 pages. They had all three books of this series just got first.

I just finished reading Atlas Shrugged after the book sat on my desk for 2 years.

Definitely an interesting read especially in these times

If that’s not your speed an easy way into Brandon Sanderson is his mistborn series also amazing

Have you seen the movie, "Barfly?" It is .loosely based on CB's life and brilliantly acted by Micky Rourke and Faye Dunaway. It can be tough to watch at points, as alcoholism can be a real drag, but worth it overall I think.
No I haven't. I'll have to watch it sometime.
